Volleyball Basics for Beginners

Volleyball is an exciting, fast-paced sport that millions of people enjoy around the world. Understanding the basics can improve your performance and enjoyment, whether you play on the beach, at the gym or in your own backyard. Here’s a short guide to get you started.

The Goal

Volleyball’s main goal is to score points by sending a ball through the net into the court of the opponent team in a manner that prevents them from returning it. The team that wins the rally is the one who either lands the ball on the other team’s court, or forces the opposing team into a mistake.

The Court

A volleyball court standard is 18 meters in length and 9 meters in width, divided by a net into two equal halves. The height of the net is 2.43 meters in men’s volleyball and 2.24 meters in women’s volleyball. At any given time, each team has six players in the court. They are positioned three rows up and three rows down.

Basic Skills

  1. Serving – This is the way play begins. The serve can be made underhand or with the overhand technique. It must pass over the net into the court of the opponent without touching your side.
  2. Passing : Also known as a bump or a first contact, passing is when you receive the serve. This is crucial to setting up the next move.
  3. Setting : This is the second touch, which is usually done with the fingertips to position the ball in preparation for a spike.
  4. Spiking : A powerful downward strike intended to land the ball on the opposing court.
  5. Blocking : A defensive move where players in the front row jump close to the net and prevent the spike of the opponent from crossing their court.
  6. Digging : A defensive technique used to stop the ball from touching down on the court following an opponent’s spike.

Rules and Scoring

Most matches are played using a best of five sets format. Each set is worth 25 points. However, a team has to win by at least 2 points. The fifth set is played at 15 points if the match has reached that point. The rally scoring system is used to score points on each serve.

Teams and Strategies

Communication and teamwork is essential in volleyball. The players must communicate constantly to set up plays and defend and attack strategies, as well as cover the court. Rotations allow every player to experience different positions and contribute to a dynamic team.
